MBFWA #1

The incredible view from the plane.

The time of year had arrived where designers, models, bloggers and fashion industry officials of both national and international status ventured to Sydney for the forthcoming Spring/Summer collections the industry had on offer. Naturally, I put University and work on hold for the week while I flew over from Melbourne to experience the event that is Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. It being my first fashion week, I'd landed in Sydney with high expectations, excitement, and a bundle of nerves that made me want to scurry back to the beautiful city I called home. Instead though, I soldiered on and found myself fascinated by everything and everyone behind the mega event.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week

Carriageworks, Sydney - venue for Mercedez Benz Fashion Week 2013

As a Front of House Volunteer, my duties wouldn't seem to flash to the every day person - consisting of setting up the venue, filling and positioning gift bags, cleaning up after the shows and ushering guests - but it was important because we were doing the things that you expected to just be 'there.' Soon, the hours we'd spent on positioning products and looping every giftbag handle the same way on 600+ seats - the attention to detail - quickly and clearly became part of a much bigger picture, and one that would be open for criticism on a global scale.

Set-up for the Jeremy Brunsdon show

I was fortunate enough to be able to view the shows that I had worked at, which included White Sands Swimwear, the Group Swim (consisting of Skye & Staghorn, Gypsea, Maidenlove, and Surface Too Deep), Alice McCall (!!!) and Bless'd Are The Meek. From swimwear to ready-to-wear, I enjoyed every show, but Alice McCall was the one that stood out immediately. I was encapsulated by the light materials of bone and pastel colours, intricate beading, and soft, clean cuts that were complemented by the gust of wind that made the petal sleeves of tops and delicate openings of skirts flutter as the models strutted down the runway.

Model walk rehearsal (in their own clothes)

The highlights of the week for me, other than getting the opportunity to experience the whole thing and watch the shows, were seeing the fashion bloggers and models that I've admired over the years! I was lucky enough to see Nicole Warne (Gary Pepper Vintage), Connie Cao (K is for Kani), Jessica Stein (Tuula), Rachel Rutt, and Samantha Harris on numerous occasions. However, I failed to ask for any photos because of shyness/in fear of being unprofessional (definitely regretted later!).

I do have photos of these spottings, behind-the-scenes action and actual show magic, but they're all sub-par as they were taken on my phone and would be of no use to anyone!

If you're considering volunteering for any Fashion Week in any country, I'd suggest that you take the opportunity and do it. Get the experience, be confident, and network with people! I'll definitely be applying for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week this year, and hope that maybe, just maybe, one day I'll be fortunate enough to get an actual invite to one of the shows that are being held. And if you can, stay for the whole week - I got invited to a Fashion Party but (of course) it was on the day of my flight back home.

I'll be putting up an outfit post this week, so keep an eye out!

  14. Love the photos! I'd really love to volunteer at a fashion week, but unfortunately my country doesn't really have great fashion weeks. We do have some fashion shows, but those are quite smaller and I don't think they search for volunteers :/
